Jazz Combo gives intermediate instrumental students the opportunity to learn to play jazz music. The class is open to students aged 10+ who play an instrument typically found in a jazz combo. This includes piano, guitar, bass, drums, brass (trumpet or trombone) and wind instruments (saxophone, clarinet, flute). Students will meet daily for two weeks and be thoroughly immersed in learning jazz music. Briefly, jazz music deals with the art of musical improvisation. Improvisation is learning how to create and play musical ideas on the spot. To be able to do so, students will lean about jazz harmonies and scales that pertain to jazz songs known as “standards”.
Topics covered will include learning what a jazz standard is and becoming familiar with jazz repertoire. Students will learn about the different harmonies of each standard and how those harmonies are built. Students will learn different types of scale structures that can be used for each harmony and how these structures can be used to improvise over a jazz standard. Lastly, students will be exposed to arranging music for a jazz combo based on the instrumentation that results for the class. Students will learn how to blend different instruments together and how those instruments fit into a the group in order to create music.
No previous experience with jazz music is needed, only that the students have been playing their respective instrument for a minimum of two years. Having strong reading skills for your instrument is recommended as the jazz combo will be working out of charts for each song. Students are expected to bring their respective instruments to each class where appropriate (amplifiers, drums, pianos, chairs & music stands will be provided). Registration is limited to 6 students, so get registered and start swinging today!
