SMMC would like to congratulate clarinet student Junniya H. for earning the “Student Of The Month” award for October 2026. Junniya has been taking clarinet lessons with SMMC since September 2023. This month marks his second year of enrollment in private lessons at our Center. In that time, Junniya has developed into a good, well rounded clarinetist and musician. Junniya has participated in San Marino Music Center’s Chamber Ensemble and has performed with the orchestra programs offered through the South Pasadena School District. Junniya has also performed at our Center’s yearly recital programs on more than one occasion.
On Learning Clarinet
When it comes to learning to play the clarinet, one of the first techniques to be learned is developing proper breadth support. This involves developing control over one’s diaphragm and using it to fill your belly with air as opposed to breathing from the chest. When taking a deep breadth, the diaphragm flattens to allow air into the lungs. Exhaling normally allows the diaphragm to assume it’s normal shape. When playing clarinet, students must learn to use their core muscles to keep the diaphragm flat while exhaling. This forces an intense, concentrated stream of air that can then be used to support a rich, full sound on the clarinet. Students can practice this by taking deep breaths and then holding their abs in place while exhaling.
The next technique that needs developing is a players embouchure. The embouchure is how a wind player uses the muscles of their face and mouth to play. It affects a players air, tone and pitch control. To start, the bottom lip needs to be pushed tightly against the bottom teeth. The muscles of the chin must be flexed as well while not flexing the neck muscles. The top teeth are place on the mouthpiece while pulling the top lip tight around. To get a visual of what the embouchure should look like, students can mimic speaking the syllable “ooo” while tightening the mouth and chin muscles. Finally, when comfortable, a student places the mouthpiece in this opening and blows.
The Instrument Is Key
The most common type of clarinet students get started on is the B flat clarinet. This instrument comes in five different parts: the mouthpiece, barrel, upper tube, lower tube and the bell. Each piece is attached to the next via cork that creates tight seals where air cannot escape. All along the tube are various keys whose jobs are to cover airholes that control the airflow and pitch the instrument plays. With so many intricate parts, it’s important to use a good quality instrument that will not get in the way of a musician’s learning ability. SMMC carries quality instruments that will do just that. These can be rented from our shop or our online store.
In His Teacher’s Words
Junniya takes clarinet lessons at SMMC with Mr. Osvaldo Gonzalez. Osvaldo is a multi-instrumentalist who teaches clarinet, saxophone and oboe. He received his Masters in Music in Clarinet Performance from Cal State University Los Angeles and has taught at SMMC since June of 2022. Of Junniya, Mr. Gonzales writes: “Junniya is a motivated and attentive student who‘s demonstrated consistent progress. He participated in SMMC’s chamber ensemble and performed successfully in multiple recitals. He consistently comes to lessons well-prepared with enthusiasm, curiosity, and dedication to learning. As a clarinetist, Junniya exhibits a strong sense of rhythm, keen attention to detail, and the ability to produce a clear, pleasing tone. Junniya continues to make steady progress in his musical development. To further strengthen his playing, he is focusing on maintaining consistent breath support and developing greater technical speed and fluency. With continued dedication and focused practice, he has the potential to become an even more accomplished clarinetist.”
