Congratulations Dominic L.
For anyone looking to have their children learn music, piano is a great starting point. We’ve previously listed our “Top Three Instruments” for young children to begin learning music. Piano is definitely at the top of that list! Building a musical foundation with piano will help any student in all their future musical endeavors. Whether it’s expanding to a different instrument altogether, learning music theory, or undertaking composition, piano knowledge and technique are key.
Learning to read for the instrument will introduce music students to the grand staff. This means they will be able to read in treble and bass clef. Music for numerous instruments are written in both of these clefs, so branching out to another instrument won’t be as challenging. Piano is both a chordal instrument and a melodic instrument. By serving both functions, students will be more adept at understanding music theory. Being a chordal and melodic instrument also allows a piano player to participate in ANY group setting or as a soloist. The instrument’s versatility is endless!
Dominic has been taking music lessons at SMMC since March 2022. That is exactly 3 years ago! Dominic was selected by his teacher for a number of reasons. Firstly, his consistent practice routine has Dominic finishing his pieces and assignments consistently and with good quality. Along with learning new pieces, Dominic works in new techniques to his playing from the pieces he learns. This includes scales, arpeggios and learning more complicated rhythms. Some students can become frustrated when working on these elements, but Dominic does not display that trait. When piano playing gets difficult, Dominic stays patient and true to his practice routine. He knows that with time, improvement will come.
In His Teachers Words
Dominic takes piano lessons from Mr. Jonathan. Mr. Jonathan has been playing the instrument himself since the age of seven. He studied Jazz Performance and Improvisation at the University of Michigan where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree. Mr. Jonathan has also studied classical piano extensively and many of his students participate in ABRS testing. Mr. Jonathan performs extensively in the Los Angeles area and has been known to play solo’s and duets at SMMC’s Blossom Market Hall showcases over the past few years.
Of Dominic, Mr. Jonathan writes, “Nominating Dominic was really easy for me. He makes consistent progress on a weekly basis and finishes his pieces in a very timely manner. That’s important because his lessons don’t ever feel like they are getting stagnant or stale. Although it’s not required, Dominic will often memorize the pieces he works on. This not only shows that he’s practiced a good amount, it shows that he practices with attention. As a piano player, his ability to articulate the music he is playing sets him apart from others his age. On top of that, he always shows up with a great attitude to his lessons. Dominic does not typically say in class, but I can tell what he is thinking through his unique hand gestures and facial expressions! He also ends all of our lessons with a celebration dance! It’s always very fun to work with someone so light hearted and carefree.”
Whoa-that sounds like Dominic knows how to have a good time.
